Supporting families for a confident first school start

Summary
Will your child start 4-year-old or 5-year-old kindergarten soon? The first school transition (T1) is an important step for children and parents. With the right support, it helps children arrive at school with confidence and encourages positive engagement from the very beginning.
The Accueil aux immigrants de l’Est de Montréal (AIEM) provides free support to immigrant families to make the transition to kindergarten easier, understand school registration steps, and prepare for the start of the school year.
What is the first school transition (T1)?
The first school transition refers to the move from early childhood into kindergarten. It highlights the importance of strong connections between the family, the school, childcare settings, and community organizations to support children and parents before, during, and after the start of school.
How AIEM’s T1 transition agent can support you
AIEM’s T1 transition agents listen to families’ needs and work closely with local partners. Their role is to support a smooth transition to kindergarten and strengthen collaboration among the people and services surrounding the child.
Support can include clear information about key steps before kindergarten, help understanding documents required for registration, answers to parents’ questions about 4- or 5-year-old kindergarten, guidance toward helpful neighbourhood resources, and links with childcare settings and community partners when relevant.
When to start preparing for kindergarten
The transition often begins in the fall before registration and can continue after the school year starts, while the child and family adjust to the new environment.
Key moments usually include learning about your neighbourhood school and registration dates in the fall, preparing documents in January, sharing helpful information about the child’s development during the winter, welcome activities in the spring, practical preparation during the summer, and support at the start of school, with follow-ups as needed in the months that follow.
Preparing your child for the start of school in Montréal
Preparing for the school start can reduce stress and support a positive transition. The T1 agent can help families better understand school expectations, set up reassuring routines, and support the child through this new stage of school life.
