A free AIEM service that supports immigrant children aged 6 to 12 with school adjustment, emotional well-being, and a growing love of reading, in collaboration with families and school settings in Montréal, including Saint-Léonard, Anjou, Rivière-des-Prairies, and Pointe-aux-Trembles.

Support to adjust better to school in Québec

Starting school in Québec, or adapting to a new school system, can be challenging for some children, especially when it is part of an immigration journey. The Socio-Emotional Development and Early Reading service supports children and their families to promote smoother school adjustment, stronger social and emotional skills, French learning through reading, and greater confidence and sense of safety at school.

This service complements the school setting and does not replace the school’s role.

Why socio-emotional development and reading matter

School adjustment is not only about academic learning. This service aims to support the child’s emotional well-being, encourage positive relationships with peers and adults, build language and comprehension through reading, and help prevent certain school or relationship difficulties.

Reading becomes a tool to understand the world, express emotions, and strengthen the child’s connection to school.

A structured approach in three areas

Group activities connected to school

In collaboration with primary schools, especially those welcoming students from immigrant backgrounds or in reception classes, workshops are offered around reading and self-expression. Activities, adapted to age, focus on emotions, respect, self-esteem, and friendship and cooperation.

Homework help and school support

AIEM’s homework help supports school learning, strengthens autonomy, and encourages perseverance. It takes place in a calm, structured, supportive environment.

Family support and guidance

Support is offered to parents to better understand their child’s school and emotional needs, improve communication between the family and the school setting, and refer to other AIEM services or partner resources when relevant.

A complementary service for schools

This service may be suggested to families by schools, recommended by school teams or school-based professionals, and used as an added support to a child’s school pathway. It does not replace educational services, but supports the child’s overall integration.
